Shire of Jerramungup
With an estimated population of 1,162 residents within a 6,507.1-square-kilometre land area, the Shire of Jerramungup is a sparsely populated Local Government Area in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia, roughly 422 kilometres south-east of Perth, the state capital. With some locations fronting the Great Australian Bight, the LGA forms part of Australia's south-western boundaries. Jerramungup is an Aboriginal word that is believed to mean "place of upstanding yate trees".
Previously part of the Shire of Gnowangerup, the Shire of Jerramungup was established as its own Local Government Area in 1982. The LGA's localities include Boxwood Hill, Bremer Bay, the Fitzgerald River, Gairdner, Jacup, Jerramungup, and Needilup. It is represented by the Electoral District of Wagin in the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia, as well as in the Australian House of Representatives by the Federal Division of O'Connor. Neighbouring LGAs are Albany, Gnowangerup, Kent, and Ravensthorpe.
Primarily an agricultural region, the Shire of Jerramungup is not particularly a tourism hotspot. Still, the Local Government Area has its share of attractions that locals and visitors alike can appreciate. Some of the LGA's most notable locales include Fisheries Beach Marina, Fitzgerald River National Park, Hassell Homestead, Jerramungup Heritage Trail, Lions Park, Miles Rock, Quaalup Homestead and Museum, Roe Park, Root Pickers Hall, and Wellstead Museum.
Aside from its local attractions, the Shire of Jerramungup also has a number of community groups and sports clubs and facilities for the benefit of its residents.
